Castle Triathlon Seires 2011 - 2nd Place in the Series

Posted by Tom on Monday, September 26, 2011, In : 2011 Season
Once again this year my domestic season's racing has been focused around the fantastic Castle Triathlon Series; 4 races in 4 stunning locations....and quite a bit of prize money on hand too which was nice!

Cholmondeley Castle

The first event in Cholmondeley Castle near Crewe. This came the week after a middle distance event in China - needless to say, I was a little bit tired and sore. But the nature of the series competition was that it was your best 3 from 4 races to count for the series so I...

Relish Running Races - Dyrham Park Series

Posted by Tom Room on Sunday, August 7, 2011, In : Relish The Great Outdoors
Another wonderful day was enjoyed by all at the beautiful National Trust property Dyrham Park. With 10km, 3km, relay and 300m races there was fun for all levels of experience.

Runners set off up Neptune's Hill for the first time!

The 10km was run over a challenging yet stunning course, with winner Will Christofi leading the field in a rapid time of 37.50 minutes. Lead woman Georgia Wood defended her victory from the inaugural race by an impressive two minutes. The runners enjoyed breath...

ITU Weihai - Part (i) The Race

Posted by Tom Room on Friday, June 17, 2011, In : 2011 Season
Going to make this a two parter, one of the race, one about China.

40 minutes before the race I was all ready to go with my transition laid out so I thought I would top up my tyres with air. I saw the mechanic put on the valve of the pump and then the next second he had taken the wheel valves apart. My deep section front wheels has a couple of valve extenders which apparently intrigued him so he thought he would have a look. I couldn't get the threads to re-align, and he continued to take more...

Always get your bike serviced 3 weeks before a big race.....

Posted by Tom Room on Sunday, June 5, 2011, In : Coaching
This is what I always tell all my athletes, and I do listen to own advice, thankfully...

Monday the bike goes in for a post winter service, no problems, just want it to be running in tip top (best) condition for China. That evening I have a voicemail, "Tom, I don't know how to say this, so I wont, you needed to come into the shop". A tad dramatic but this clearly is not good. To cut a long story short, and through many ups and downs, I was on the look out for a new bike with 2 weeks to go befo...

Racing towards China

Posted by Tom Room on Saturday, May 28, 2011, In : 2011 Season
Over the last few weeks I have been packing in even more warm up races and it is really starting to come through in the results;

17th May - Corsham 5km. I arrived with less than 5mins before the start......at least it made for a good brick session. My legs didn't feel super but I ran 17:13 on a hilly course to win the race

22nd May - Bradford on Avon Sprint Tri. I really enjoy this race. An open water swim in the Avon, a very hilly bike and fast and flat run. I was neck and neck with Paul Horsf...

Early Season Racing

Posted by Tom Room on Friday, May 6, 2011, In : Coaching
Over the last couple of weeks I have been getting in as much racing as possible. My weakness last season was run speed so I wanted to set about addressing this as soon as possible; by racing as many foot races between now and when my full triathlon season starts.

It has highlighted to me again just how useful these training races are as after each race my legs seemed to have found another gear;

April 19th - Frenchay 10km - 10th (or so) I didn't really check the results after this race. It was ...

New ventures, exciting times, Relishing The Great Outdoors

Posted by Tom Room on Saturday, April 30, 2011, In : Relish The Great Outdoors
I have been reflecting a lot recently about where I am going with my career - the one other than triathlon ;-)

I have been doing a lot of work with students with learning difficulties for the last few years and it has been very enjoyable work. However, the routes for progression are very limited. And much like my triathlon career, it is only worth doing if I feel like it is going somewhere.

The solution I have decided upon, is to amalgamate the two. Or rather, I have decided to expand the horiz...

Great move from ICAN Triathlon

Posted by Tom Room on Thursday, March 31, 2011, In : ICAN Triathlon
The new tirathlon organisation ICAN Triathlon which currently produces long distance races in Marbella and Malllorca ois offering a fanstastic service to athletes when out on the bike course - neutral service motor bikes providing wheel replacement for punctures.

Given that most athletes take part in triathlon for the challenge of competing rather than competing this small gesture will have a massive impact on those athletes unfortunate enough to puncture and at the same time extend a very po...

Priorities - More on Season Planning

Posted by Tom Room on Thursday, March 31, 2011, In : Thoughts
I felt good about the blog I wrote a while back about How to Plan a Season / The Problem with being SMART but when it came to plan my own season it became clear that I was missing something as much to my frustration I was struggling to enact my own philosophy;

S = Suffering
W = Wild Ambition
E = Exceeding Limits
A = Achievable
(still important, just not that important)
T = Time Frame
E = Exciting
D = Daring

I found that my own season plans were not exciting, nor daring and they did not strike me as a...

The problem with being SMART

Posted by Tom Room on Sunday, January 23, 2011, In : Thoughts
There are a few key phrases associated with goal setting; process goals, outcome goals and SMART goals. The 3 are interlinked in that you first decide upon outcome goals for the season. You then put in process goals (training/coaching and race tactics) to achieve this. All the time, you are told to make sure that these goals are SMART to ensure that they are achieved.

SMART Goals

    Are described as;

S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Achievable
R = Realistic
T = Time frame

The premise being that if y...

Training Week 17th - 23rd January

Recovery Week

It's been a very busy week work rise and I have been organising the Bath Run Series which has had it's last event on Sunday which was a great success. Consequently I have been too busy/tired to do the training I had planned. But in recovery weeks especially it is more important to actual recover somewhat than just becoming progressively more tired. Especially as I am going to Lanzarote on Tuesday for 11 days to get some high quality training in, it didn't make sense to go there t...

2010 Season Evaluation Part (i)

Posted by Tom Room on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, In : Season Review
At the beginning of the 2010 season I resolved to take a fresh approach to being a Professional Triathlete. In short, in 2008 & 2009 I had raced the Pro World Championships but triathlon remained far from being a profession - I was spending far more money chasing qualifying spots around the world than I was gaining in prize money. Competing in triathlon professionally was losing me money. There were two options; keep doing what I was doing and become bankrupt or revaluate my priorites so I ca...

The Pro Triathlete Dilemma (ii) - how many races is too many?

Posted by Tom Room on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, In : Thoughts
What I Decided

Race 3 was a target race for the year being a half ironman. The added incentive was that my wetsuit sponsor TRI 11 is a German company. I fancied my chances of leading out the swim in the race, Challenge Walchsee, just over the boarder. Getting this relatively new company good TV coverage was a priority as they have been very good to me and I wanted to justify their investment.....and help retain it for next year. So race 3 is a definite.

Race 2 was part of a series I was ...

The Pro Triathlete Dilemma (I) - How much is money worth?

Posted by Tom Room on Wednesday, October 6, 2010, In : Thoughts
What is worth more - winning money in a smaller race VS finishing position in a big race ?

Well, obviously they are both important. Money is important, 'it can be exchanged for good or services' (H. Simpson) which most people, myself have included have need of....cakes and keeping Isaac in working order. A good finish (top 10) in a big race - Challenge Series or 70.3 looks more impressive but when costs are taken into account, you may often still finish the race with a deficit in your wallet.

Once in that lead group I made every effort on conserve my energy (yes, I drafted off them!), slowly working my way into second position by the half way point. 3 Recent Good Happenings in the Triathlon World

Entrepreneurship - Have a look here

(i) A friend of mine, Alex Lewis, pitched on Dragon's Den a few weeks ago and successfully in obtaining the money he needed to get his awesome idea up to speed.

A couple of years ago I raced the British National Championships, in March, in torrential rain and gales on a Welsh hillside. Out of the 25 or so athletes I think everyone started the ten lap bike. Alex was one of the smart ones who dropped out after a lap or two. I was too stubborn and rode on for 7...

Allerthorpe Sprint Triathlon Write Up. 4/10

I last completed in the Allerthorpe Triathlon in 2008 when I had a stress fracture in my foot. I didn't know it at the time though, and I was hoping the 2010 edition would be slightly less uncomfortable.

Swim
I was really pleased with my swim. I broke away early on and on a technical course I managed to come out in 8:23! I have to confess this sounds too fast, but it was 30 seconds quicker than 2 years ago so I would like to think it is not too far off. Either way it set me up nicely for the r...

After Challenge Barcelona I had been looking forward to racing ITU Asian Long Distance Championships in South Korea, but due to what the organiser described as "local issues", the race has been postponed...indefinitely!

This has mucked up my season somewhat. I had been intending to race 3 ITU Long Distance races; Korea, China and Ibiza and thus qualify for the ITU Series prize. But without Korea, I can't justify going to China just for giggles and racing Ibiza which is an 03 distance, also los...

Training Week 5th-11th June

I took the disappointment of Barcelona pretty hard, as my recent write ups may have suggested. Possibly I was a bit harsh on myself, but the point is that it is only the result that counts, the number next to your name. There is no room for conditional clauses in results at a high level (or any level if you want to be honest with yourself)....I raced well "given that" [insert excuse] etc. Sometimes there is an element of truth, I am sure I would have raced better in Barcelona had I not been s...

Pre-Race

I was really looking forward to doing this race. I haven't done a sprint in a couple of years and Bradford on Avon presented the perfect opportunity to do a local, open-water race, in a beautiful setting. My body was still a little bit sore from Challenge Barcelona the weekend before, the ride to the race necessatated a rest in itself, but a race is a race, and you've just got to work with what you've got on race day.

Inter-semester break could not have arrived at a better time. Whilst running in the snow was still fun,

...riding the rollers for a couple of hours a day in the kitchen was starting to lose it's charm, so it was off to Lanzarote for 8 days of sunshine and riding.

The trip incurred a few minor hiccups early on when Jack dislocat...

Ironman Pro License (Part I)

Posted by Tom Room on Thursday, January 14, 2010, In : WTC
This series of posts is concerning the new WTC's (World Triathlon Corperation) new Pro License for all official M-Dot branded Ironman and 70.3 events. I will try and present a balanced discussion over three parts.
- The first part (which can be found here) looks at the official WTC line and the view of Graeme Stewart who tries to find the positives in the new scheme (though he clearly isn't a fan)
- The second part will look at the aim of this initiative - to bring to life an Anti-Doping Progra...

Brown snow is chewy...

Posted by Tom Room on Sunday, January 3, 2010, In : Home
...let it never be said the children of the North are not insightful (or very good at sledging)

I have just returned from a great week at home in the North for Christmas. And there was snow, which excites any Northener. Tom and I polished up and hammered together his dad's 50 year old wooden sledge to great effect. Not only were we the envy of every kid on the hill, we almost garroted ourselves on the barbed wire fence at the bottom. Fortunately we had foreseen this happening and placed a sho...

2010 Strategy....A fresh approach

Posted by Tom Room on Saturday, December 12, 2009, In : 2010 Campaign
Old Approach

The ambition of every newbie pro triathlete, including me, was to race the best in the world at the best races in the world -> Race at the World Championships (Done)

For the last two years this has been my approach to being a professional triathlete, and I mistakenly thought that in itself was a means to an end. Well, I guess if I want to end my career early then it is true, for it is a fast track to bankruptcy and no more. There simply is not enough money in the sport to support a...

2009 Season Complete....looking back through the year

Posted by Tom Room on Sunday, December 6, 2009, In : Season Review
Now, 1 week into the 2010 campaign, my thoughts are already wondering over to the far off race season. But if I am going to plan ahead properly, it is only right I look back at the year just gone. Did I achieve my objectives?

2009 Objectives

(i) Get to the Pro 70.3 Ironman World Championships
(ii) Break 4hrs for a 70.3
(iii) Finish in the top 25 at the Worlds
(iv) Earn some money from the sport
(v) Be more consistent - don't break myself

(i) Be at the Pro 70.3 Ironman World Championships?
Well I cer...

Reflections on Clearwater (Part II) - Why the Pro World Championships is flawed

Posted by Tom Room on Monday, November 23, 2009, In : Pro Drafting

It is the density of riders that dooms the Pro World Championship where as the relatively poorly attended series events do not suffer the same problem.

If you assume the pros ride at modest 25mph that means they are travelling 11.2m/sec. That means they can come out the water/start the bike within a second of each other, and whilst still being technically draft legal, they are right on top of one another.

Looking at athletes exiting the water to find the greatest density (highest number of ath...

Reflections on Clearwater

Posted by Tom Room on Tuesday, November 17, 2009, In : Pro Drafting

Going into the race I had two objectives; break 4hrs (targetting 3hrs57m) and to finish in the top 25, 30, 37 (A, B, C goals). I finished in 3hrs57m08sec (I attribute the lost 8 seconds to a scuffle with a motorbike and a fence) and placed 48th -  which I attribute to cheating on the bike and weak refereeing and enforcement of the rules. I am aware that my words may seem harsh, and I know there were other clean riders out there, but in general, as a whole, the race was a joke.

Countdown to Clearwater...10 days to go - Giving Isaac a bath

Posted by Tom Room on Wednesday, November 4, 2009, In : 70.3 World Champs 2009
Over the last few days I have put in my last long sessions;

- 3.8km swim
- 2hrs 45mins bike (should have been 3.5hrs but sometimes you have to know when enough is enough)
- 1hr 45min run

And it just gets shorter and faster from here on in...

Today was my last day in Bath and I did a race pace swim which gave me a lot of confidence; 15x100m off 1:15 coming in 1:10. Admittedly it was in a wetsuit but I felt good and could have carried on. The rest of the day has been spent packing, which for a compl...

Clearwater Countdown - 16 days...training and 5km race

Posted by Tom Room on Thursday, October 29, 2009, In : 70.3 World Champs 2009
Over the last few weeks training has been steadily improving, firstly getting back to where I was after Muskoka and Augusta, and then pushing forward towards Clearwater. For the first time in over a year I feel like I am running "okay", I have actually been running on the road in the last few weeks and haven't had an adverse reaction (last season and most of this one has been characterised by stress fracture issues). So I decided to put my running to the test with my first road race in 2 year...

Bye Dan and thank you Teambath

Posted by Tom Room on Saturday, October 17, 2009, In : Teambath Headache
Six years ago Dan and I started university at Bath to explore the crazy notion of actually getting good at triathlon. Back in 2003 Bath was the place for triathlon in the UK, inspring athletes like Julie Dibens, and we even had TWO coaches. Through a lot of hard work Dan and I both managed to get along pretty well and have been racing elite for some years now, but today Dan moved to Leeds - why would he do that??

Clearwater Countdown - 5 weeks to go....hot box and coaching

Posted by Tom Room on Tuesday, October 13, 2009, In : 70.3 World Champs 2009
With the 70.3 World Championships on the horizon I thought it was about time I finally got a blog/website up and running. After a very busy and exciting September racing in Muskoka 70.3 (Canada) and Augusta 70.3 it was time to get back to some serious training.

The week started with a hot box session. People say there is a love hate relationship about running on a treadmill in a heat chamber (read plastic box with a bar heater) I am yet to experience the pleasant side. The aim being to start ...
